Evendale Recreation Commission
February 16, 2006
Meeting called to order at 6:32pm.
Roll Call: Wayne Mosley, Craig Reeder, Gus Janszen, David Nichols, Pam Meyers, Mary Lou Isaac. Absent: Michele Gottschlich and Doug Lohmeier.
Recognition of Visitors:
Kristen Maiden, Program Supervisor
Kim Pielage, Program Supervisor
Jim & James Owens, Evendale residents
New Business:
· Kristen Maiden introduced herself to Commission members. She is responsible for sports, contractual programs, child care, and building attendants.
Commission members agree that she does a “heck of a job.”
· Kim Pielage introduced herself to Commission members. She is responsible for Phi Lambda Pi, some Family Special Events, and Children’s Programs.
Commission members stated they have attended many events and they are “always a blast.”
· Jim and James Owens request the Recreation Department and village consider installing a skate park for skateboarders and rollerbladers.
The only place for kids to skateboard in Evendale is in parking lots, and these are not fully safe places. Many parents are driving kids to other communities for a safe place for the kids to skateboard. Jim and James toured many other skate parks, and talked with their directors. The directors said they averaged 50-100 users per day with few problems. James thought there were about 20 skateboarders (all male) in Evendale.
James would like to see Evendale install a skate park by soccer field #3, between the services garage and the tennis courts. This location is visible to police and road traffic.
Motion made by Gus Janszen for David Nichols to get cost and life expectancy for a low-end, mid-range, and high-end park; Wayne Mosley seconded the motion. Motion approved.
Old Business
· Tri-Health Report
Fitness numbers have increased 4% from the same time last year.
· Motion made by Wayne Mosley to make the 2006 Commission meeting times at 7:30am; seconded by Gus Janszen. Motion passed.
· 2006 Goals & Objectives
1. Sports Trainer – bring in a well-qualified trainer, especially for the beginner levels, in our youth sports programs. This would allow the kids, and the volunteer coaches, to learn the proper basics; and develop skills when kids are young.
2. Soccer Field #3 is too long for the young players, and too short for the older players; can we add fields (and parking) where Churchills used to be?
3. Trail from Gorman Heritage Farm to Glendale-Milford Road via Kingsport Drive.
4. Where soccer field #3 is located, install paddle tennis courts.
5. Develop a wellness program (Active for Life, etc) for people over 50 who may know nothing or very little about fitness, nutrition, exercise, etc.
6. Investigate and review the cost of the Village operating the fitness center.
7. Review the program fees and costs, and adjust accordingly.
Director’s Report
· Policy sub-committee formed: Pam Meyers, Mary Lou Isaac, and David Nichols.
· Fees sub-committee formed: Wayne Mosley, Gus Janszen, and David Nichols.
· SwimSafe Pool Management will require work permits for 14-17 year olds. (Note: The department will also require work permits for seasonal workers.) Also, fifteen year olds may no longer sit at the top of the pool slide; they must be sixteen and lifeguards. This will add approximately $3500 to labor costs specified in the RFP and bid. The 2006 pool manager will be Lakota school teacher, Doug Karlburg; assistant manager is Evendale resident Jon Bennett.
Phi Lambda Pi Report
· December ended the candle and Entertainment Book sales. The group raised $850.00
· This has been a normal month for Phi with no special events happening. The tubing trip was cancelled because of lack of sign-ups.
· The ping-pong, mini-cornhole, and pool tournaments were held.
